Marco polo referred
to the Maldives as the 'Flower of the Indies',
while Ibn Batuta, the famous 14th century Arab traveller, called it
'one of the wonders of the world' in his chronicles.
Scattered
across the equator in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the necklace of
islands that is the Maldives offers a rare vision of tropical paradise.
Palm fringed islands with sparkling white beaches, turquoise lagoons,
clear warm waters and coral reefs teeming with abundant marine flora
and fauna continue to fascinate visitors.
Truly a natural
wonder, the islands rarely exceed two meters in height. The 1,190
islands, consisting of 26 atoll formations, are spread over an area of
some 90,000 square kilometres.
The origins of the Maldivians
are lost in antiquity. Historical and archaeological evidence indicate
that the islands were first inhabited over 5,000 years ago. There are
also indications that the Maldives, having being on an important trade
route, were settled by people from all over the world, leaving the
actual origins shrouded mystery. |

Male' The Capital
Male’, just 10 minutes from the airport by boat, is the capital of
Maldives. Although a mere two square kilometres in area, the island is
home to about 70,000 people, and being the centre of commerce and the
seat of government, the pace of life in Male’ is unlike anywhere else
in the Maldives.
Although
you would see little of the past on the surface as you walk down the
streets of Male’, it was for centuries an island of kings and queens,
of pomp and pageantry. Now it is a busy island with modern
glass-fronted office buildings, schools and hospitals, hotels and
restaurants, paved roads and throngs of people going about their
business.
Male’ is divided into four wards or administrative
areas, while the nearby island of Villingili has recently been added as
a satellite town of Male’, becoming its fifth ward. Regular ferries
operate between Male’ and Villingili, which can be reached in less than
10 minutes. |
| Over 10 dream
islands...
In
many ways Maldivian resorts are unique. For a start, each resort is on
its own island and therefore when you are holidaying on one, the whole
island is yours to enjoy. Consequently each resort has to be
self-contained - producing its own electricity, desalinates its own
water and has its own waste disposal facilities.
There are
certain set standards when islands are planned for tourism development.
In every resort island that is developed the building area should not
exceed twenty percent of the total land area of the island. The
buildings should not rise above the vegetation line. All guest rooms
built should have five linear metres of beach in front.
Each
resort has its own unique natural beauty, style and concept. Some have
been carefully planned to give you an atmosphere of total peace and
relaxation while others offer a variety of activities, games and
entertainment. While some have been developed using local architectural
features and designs, others have incorporated more modern
international styles.
