Which News Organization Is The Most Trusted? The Answer Is Complicated

For a news-house to gain trust from the public, there has to be a lot of effort put there. A media house can be win trust or distrust from the public depending on the ideologies in politics that are shared by the public. Many people want to know which media house has won the trust of Americans. The answer to this question is not a straightforward one. It is rather complicated and can be handled in several ways:

President Barack Obama addresses members of the media with Qatar Emir Sheik Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani after meeting with Gulf Cooperation Council leaders at Camp David in Maryland, Thursday, May 14, 2015. Obama and leaders from six Gulf nations are trying to work through tensions sparked by the U.S. bid for a nuclear deal with Iran, a pursuit that has put regional partners on edge. The whole story does not come from the picture of the full population

Observe keenly at the statistics of the number of people who indicate that they fully trust an organization that airs news on politics and governance. You will be surprised that the top of the list is dominated by the mainstream media houses such as ABC, CNN, Fox News, CBS, and NBC among others. The only thing to note is that these facts and stats are so since most of the respondents have interacted with the news sources. As far as trust and distrust is concerned, majority of the Americans trust the news site that they hear most. This does not mean that the news site trusted by many is the most credible one.
Is an organization that airs news simply not trusted or not known by many?

Look at the number of people who say that they trust a certain media house. You will be surprised that majority of the people say that they trust the media source since they constantly hear of it. This therefore means that a media outlet that does not endear many listeners is not trusted. Such a media house could be airing excellent content that is credible but since it is not heard by many, it loses on trust. The top media sources such as CNN, NBC, and ABC are trusted by many since they are heard every other time. They have a trust rating of more than 50% while the less familiar sources such as NPR are way below the trust index.

Ratio of distrust to trust

You could also view the ratio of trust as compared to distrust. You will check the number of people who trust a news source versus the number of people who do not trust the news source. This ratio should be picked from the people who believe that the particular news source is trusted or not regardless of whether they have heard of the media source or not. This will result into a list of very new brands of news sources. You will realize that such sources such as the Economist, PBS, and NPR will make it to the top. BBC emerges as one of the most trusted sources of news across the board. This is because the news site has featured in a predominant manner both online and on the screens. It is your choice to check and ascertain that the media source you trust will give you credible information.
